Multicultural Chicago Wedding at the Joinery
Three words guided Meera and Baraka throughout their wedding planning process: vibrant, custom, and community. Their September celebration at The Joinery, a modern wedding venue nestled between Humboldt Park and Logan Square, embodied all three beautifully.
Our team had the honor of guiding Meera and Baraka every step of the way, overseeing everything from vendor sourcing to wedding-day execution. From the welcome festivities through a high-energy dance party that carried late into the evening, we ensured seamless transitions so the couple could stay fully present and savor every moment.
What made this celebration especially memorable was the intention behind every choice. Rather than following traditions for tradition’s sake, Meera and Baraka centered storytelling, culture, and meaningful guest experiences—creating a day that reflected who they are and where they come from.
Their Story & Vision
Meera and Baraka met in Chicago in 2018 and quickly bonded over shared curiosity, humor, and intentionality—qualities that shaped their wedding vision from the very beginning. A longtime lover of weddings and romance, Meera entered the planning process with a clear vision and high standards for her own day.
Their goal was to thoughtfully blend Tanzanian and Indian cultures with their personalities, while ensuring guests felt connected to those elements throughout the celebration. Supporting small, POC-owned businesses was also a priority, reflected in the incredible vendor team they assembled.
One of the most meaningful details was Meera’s attire: a bespoke gown by Ette the Wedding Tailor, crafted from kasavu, a traditional cotton-linen textile from Kerala. Paired with heirloom jewelry and textiles spanning nearly a century of family history, her look felt modern and intentional, yet deeply rooted in her South Indian heritage.
An Experience-Driven, Multicultural Celebration
Food and music told the story of the day just as vividly as the design. The culinary experience evoked home, memory, and the fusion of cultures that form the foundation of Meera and Baraka’s love story. Guests enjoyed Indian and Tanzanian flavors alongside a French-inspired croquembouche, a sweet nod to the couple’s engagement in Nice.
The dance floor followed suit, featuring music from across India, East and West Africa, the Caribbean, and the U.S. The result was a celebration that felt deeply personal and joy-filled, never cookie-cutter. From photography by Emily Melissa, who captured black and brown skin tones with vibrancy and care, to a DJ who curated a fully customized soundtrack, each collaborator helped bring the couple’s vision to life with thoughtfulness and intention.
The Joinery: A Modern Chicago Wedding Venue
The Joinery provided the ideal backdrop for a boldly colorful wedding rooted in culture. Its blank-canvas interior allowed the couple’s fashion, décor, and guest experience elements to shine, while the warm industrial aesthetic created an inviting, celebratory atmosphere. It’s hard to imagine a Chicago venue in a more inspiring location—or one that sparks more creativity.
This was one of those wedding days that remind us how fortunate we are to do this work. Witnessing the beauty of Meera and Baraka’s love for each other and for their cultural backgrounds, all set against the backdrop of our favorite city, was a true joy.

Kind Words from Meera and Baraka
“We chose ESC because our consultation call with Jennifer was so pleasant. She struck the perfect balance between letting us guide the conversation and making sure she gathered the important information she needed.
As an Indian person, I often found that people assumed we were planning something very traditional, and not necessarily aligned with my family’s specific cultural norms. But Jennifer, and later Victoria, truly let us show them who we are and what we wanted. They worked hard to bring that vision to life.
ESC went above and beyond in sourcing vendors, negotiating contracts, managing chaos, and serving as our sounding board throughout the process. Most importantly, they made the entire day flow so smoothly.”
