Harold Washington Library | Chicago Wedding Venue Spotlight
Where does a high-fashion aesthetic meet rich Chicago history? At the Harold Washington Library, one of our favorite South Loop wedding venues. This space offers breathtaking 20th-century architecture and is named for Chicago’s first Black mayor. As a Black-owned wedding planning team, it’s especially meaningful to plan and design events here. Plus, creativity soars amid the high ceilings and abundant natural light!
Our team had the great honor of planning Bernie and Jack’s elegant wedding at the Harold Washington Library. Today, we’re sharing some of our favorite photos from their event, along with everything you should know before planning your own celebration at this historic Chicago wedding venue.
Harold Washington Library: A Photogenic Wedding Venue with Versatile Event Spaces
Planning a wedding at the Harold Washington Library allows you to spread your event across several exceptionally designed spaces. The South Hall is an airy space with floor-to-ceiling windows and a favorite of photographers shooting couple portraits. It’s also a popular cocktail hour setting. Bernie and Jack paired cocktail hour in the South Hall with a ceremony and reception in the Winter Garden (more on that space in a moment!). Their guests enjoyed drinks and appetizers in the Hall while the Winter Garden was flipped.
The Grand Lobby is another option for cocktail hour. It offers an inspiring setting with black-and-white marble floors, a coffered ceiling, and original artwork.
The Winter Garden is easily the Harold Washington Library’s most remarkable event space. Natural light pours in through the domed glass ceiling, a unique feature that sets this venue apart from other Chicago wedding venues. Its height also creates design opportunities that aren’t possible everywhere.
Bernie and Jack held their ceremony and reception in the Winter Garden, and it was so fun to play with the lighting and architectural details to create a one-of-a-kind design for their celebration. For the ceremony, a draped backdrop drew attention to the ceiling’s apex, while candlelight reflected off the shining marble floors. Then, we flipped the space for the reception. We placed a shortened backdrop behind the sweetheart table, set guest tables underneath the string lights, and opened up a space underneath the skylight for dancing.
Planning for Success with a Short Set-Up Window
Because the Harold Washington Library is a public space rather than a private wedding venue, set-up time is comparatively short (though note that your event will still be private!). Your vendors won’t have all day to get acquainted with the space and configure décor. That’s why it’s so important to work with an all-star planning team that has done events there before.
Event Shoppe Chicago knows this venue’s layout and logistics, and we’re prepared to lead your creative team to success. Your event will come together beautifully, even with less preparation time.
If you’re envisioning a Chicago wedding that could grace the cover of Vogue, look no further than the Harold Washington Library. From memorable event spaces to a vibrant downtown location, this unique venue combines everything we love our city and its history.
