A Chicago Winter Wedding Inspired by Chinese Heritage
Lily and Xiao’s Chicago winter wedding was the kind of celebration we dream about: a stunning Chicago Cultural Center setting, meaningful details inspired by Xiao’s Chinese heritage, and freshly fallen snow blanketing the city.
The couple came to us seeking comprehensive support to bring their vision to life. Not only were they balancing demanding schedules—Lily with a busy career and Xiao in medical school—but they were also living in Ohio at the time. They needed a full-service Chicago wedding planner with experience working with out-of-town couples, deep local expertise, and a commitment to exceptional service. Enter Event Shoppe!
We connected instantly over our shared love of Chicago. Although neither Lily nor Xiao is originally from the city, Chicago has become an important part of their story. Lily is a Loyola Chicago alum (just like our founder, Jennifer Price!), and Xiao is currently completing his residency at Northwestern.
Most importantly, Chicago is where they met. Their first date took place at the Chicago Cultural Center—the very place where they would say “I do” years later.
A Chicago Winter Wedding at the Chicago Cultural Center
Planning a winter wedding in the Midwest means expecting the unexpected, from bitter winds to full-blown snowstorms. Sure enough, a snowstorm swept through Chicago during Lily and Xiao’s January wedding weekend. But it didn’t stop them from celebrating.
While several guests were unable to make the trip, so many loved ones still showed up to support the couple. And if you ask us, there’s nothing quite like freshly fallen snow to make a Chicago winter wedding feel even more magical.
The Chicago Cultural Center is one of our favorite venues because it shines in every season. Whether you’re getting married in January or July, you still get to enjoy the venue’s iconic architecture, rich history, and immersive atmosphere. Its neutral palette and timeless details also provide the perfect backdrop for a wide range of design styles.
Whether your vision is inspired by family heritage, a lush garden aesthetic, or sophisticated luxury interiors, the Cultural Center transforms beautifully to bring it to life.
Meaningful Details Inspired by Chinese Heritage
Lily and Xiao wanted their celebration to include meaningful nods to Xiao’s Chinese heritage, woven thoughtfully throughout the day. We’re especially proud of the level of intention behind every detail.
Origami accents referenced the paper cranes Xiao gave Lily on their first date. At the same time, deep scarlet tones throughout the design paid homage to the traditional Chinese symbol of good fortune and happiness. Every element felt personal, purposeful, and deeply connected to their story.
The couple also used food and drink to share pieces of their journey with guests. They served craft beer from Ohio, honoring the place they called home during their engagement, alongside signature cocktails inspired by their love of Chicago, including a Clarified Jungle Bird and a French 75.
Adding another meaningful cultural touch, cocktail hour featured a dim sum cart before dinner service began.
A Warm and Unforgettable Chicago Winter Wedding
We still think about how warm and meaningful this Chicago winter wedding felt. From the love shared between the couple and their guests to the candlelight flickering throughout the Cultural Center ballroom, every moment reflected the joy of the occasion.
It was an unforgettable winter evening in Chicago—the kind of celebration every love story deserves.
